Rocky Mountain National Park Wildlife Slide Show

Nothing makes more of an impression than the opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. The wildlife of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Estes Park area is certainly one of the top draws for visitors. Elk and mule deer are quite common and can even been seen walking the streets of downtown Estes. Coyotes, big horn sheep and moose are more elusive and typically require being in the right place at the right time. In addition, RMNP is home to larger predators such as the black bear and mountain lion. There are countless smaller mammals such as marmots, pikas, raccoons, snowshoe hares and much more. RMNP serves as an important fly-way for migrating birds and draws birders from all over the world. Depending on the time of year you are visiting, you may see a Golden Eagle or an American White Pelican, an Osprey or a White-Faced Ibis, a Mountain Bluebird or a Green-Tailed Towhee.

September marks the beginning of the elk rut or mating season. Bull elk, with their impressive antlers on display, are busy gathering and protecting their harems. Their frequent bugling is a call to potential mates as well as a statement that all other males should keep their distance. All of this takes places against the backdrop of aspens turning an iridecent gold as autumn moves into the Rockies. If you get the chance to visit Estes Park & RMNP in the late summer/early fall, try to come in mid to late September. The show the elk put on is worth the trip alone!

Since the guides at Estes Adventures are consistently spending time in RMNP, you can count on us to know where the wildlife is hanging out. All the pictures on this website were taken by us - no professional stock photos here!

Wildlife walks are the least strenuous of all our hikes typically taking place in flat valleys or around lakes. Of course we make frequent stops along the route to observe the animals at a safe distance. We like to schedule these walks either early in the morning or late in the evening just before dusk - when the wildlife is more active. This is the perfect activity for families!

Rates for wildlife walks are $40.00 per person with a minimum of two people.
