The wildlife highlight of the year arrives each September when the elk begin the rut, or mating season. The big bull elk gather their harems and begin to bugle in an attempt to prove his dominance to other bulls and to all the cow elk. Other local residents you may spot include mule deer, big horn sheep, coyotes, marmot and the occasional black bear. The area is also an important fly-way for many different species of birds as they migrate.
